Shirley King

Shirley was born in Aberdare, South Wales, graduated in Aberystwyth University and taught for some years. She then trained as an actress in the Welsh College of Music and Drama, Cardiff. Her theatre appearances include the Royal Shakespeare Company, the National Theatre, the West Yorks Playhouse, the Phoenix Theatre, Leicester and The Grand Theatre, Swansea. She toured with the Welsh Drama Company and Made in Wales.

Her TV work includes Hustle, Casualty, Ready when you are Mr McGill, A Small Summer Party, Trial and Retribution II, Midsomer Murders and The Inspector Alleyn Mysteries; Mortimer’s Law, The Old Devils (BBC Wales); Hapus Dyrfa (S4C) and We are Seven (HTV). Her films include Second Best, Sailor's Return, The Rachel Papers, and Nicholas Nickleby .

Her voice work includes the recording of Under Milk Wood, directed by Sir Anthony Hopkins; for radio The Odour of Chrysanthemums, Burning the Arc and several audio books. She also performs programmes of poetry and prose.

Amongst her many commercials, the most challenging was for Vodaphone when, as a farmer’s wife, she had to say Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch!
